The Basics of Motivational Interviewing

The Basics of Motivational Interviewing: People in the helping professions (psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, nurses, community workers and others), whether in private or public practice, often meet clients who are facing a need to change behaviour(s) that they, the clients and the workers, find difficult to accomplish. In this three-day workshop, the Spirit, processes and tools of MI, a transformational communication approach that is both efficient and client-centred, are presented in an experiential and interactive learning style aimed at teaching workers to help people to change. Participants will learn to listen for and increase the frequency and strength of the client’s discourse for change and support their autonomy. They will have the opportunity to discuss the components of MI and to practice them through real-plays and other exercises and see how they wish to transform their practice by practicing MI.

The training will help workers helping people to change, especially in the treatment of challenging clients, to use their energy more efficiently and more empathically. Participants will learn when to use, and when not to use MI, explore the fundamentals of MI, ways of integrating MI theories into other treatment approaches, and have the opportunity to practice the approach with feedback.

  1. Know and understand the spirit of MI that is fundamental to the practice;
